Animal Assisted Therapy in Counseling

An evidence-based approach that integrates a trained therapy dog into counseling to help clients feel safer, more connected, and more engaged in healing.

Unleashing Healing

AAT-C at His Story

We are launching an Animal-Assisted Therapy–Counseling (AAT-C) program that integrates a trained therapy dog into the counseling process for children, teens, adults, couples, and trauma survivors.

This evidence-based approach supports emotional regulation, reduces anxiety, and strengthens trust within the therapeutic process.

The program will be led by Dr. Lindsay Akers, whose doctoral research and published work focus on Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counseling and trauma recovery.

To launch with excellence, we are seeking support for therapy dog acquisition, training, certification, and clinical integration. Your partnership helps make this care possible.

Why AAT-C Works

What makes this approach effective

Calmer entry into care

A trained therapy dog helps clients feel calmer and more at ease, making it easier to enter the counseling process.

Stress regulation

Interaction with animals naturally lowers stress and helps regulate the nervous system during difficult conversations.

Safe connection

The nonjudgmental presence of a therapy dog helps clients feel accepted, safe, and more willing to open up.

Engagement in therapy

Clients who feel hesitant in traditional talk therapy often become more present and connected in sessions.

Trauma support

AAT-C helps individuals stay grounded while processing painful or overwhelming experiences.

Broader reach

Children, teens, adults, couples, and families benefit from increased comfort, connection, and therapeutic openness.
